Meet the Panelists

Jonathan H. Brinsden, Midway
Jonathan H. Brinsden serves as Chief Executive Officer of Midway. As one of the four members of the Midway Executive Team, Mr. Brinsden guides the company’s overall business strategy and operations.

Mr. Brinsden joined Midway’s development team in 2001 and was named Chief Operating Officer in 2008.  Prior to joining Midway, Mr. Brinsden served as President and COO of Hamm Corporation, a Houston-based development company. Mr. Brinsden is an Adjunct Professor, in the graduate real estate program, at Texas A&M University and the University of Houston. He also serves on the Executive Advisory Board for both programs.

Mr. Brinsden is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Board of Trustees and the Governance Chair, and immediate past Chair, of ULI Houston. Additionally, he is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and NAIOP. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Construction Science, a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design, and a Master’s of Science in Land and Real Estate Development, all from Texas A&M University.

Richard L. Perlmutter, Argo Development Company
Richard L. Permutter founded Argo Development Company in 1996. Since inception, the firm has completed over two million square feet of development and acquisition projects throughout the Washington, Prior to founding Argo, Richard Perlmutter was a senior vice president of South Charles Realty and South Charles Investment, both subsidiaries of Bank of America. He was responsible for over 500 transactions totaling over $1.5 billion of real estate. Among his major projects, he was responsible for several master-planned communities and extensive office projects throughout the mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States. His expertise ranges from financial engineering to multi-phase project management.

Mr. Perlmutter has a B.A. in Environmental Design from the State University of New York at Buffalo, graduate study at the University of California, Los Angeles and J.D. from the School of Law, University of Oregon.

Mr. Perlmutter has experience working as a lawyer for the United States Senate and real estate developer for several small and large real estate companies. He is active in community and professional affairs. He is a trustee of the Urban Land Institute, governor of the Urban Land Institute Foundation, chair of mission advancement of the Urban Land Institute-Washington District Council, board member of the Robert H. Smith School of Business of the University of Maryland, board member of USA Canoe/Kayak, and board member of Carl M. Freeman Associates. He also is a member of the District of Columbia Bar. Boston and New York metropolitan areas.

Susan Powers, Urban Ventures
Susan Powers is the President of Urban Ventures, LLC, an eleven year-old real estate development company in Denver which focuses its efforts in urban neighborhoods close to the core of downtown. In each development there is an emphasis on community building in the context of social, environmental and economic viability. Special interests include historic renovation, development of affordable housing, student housing, modular housing and unusual mixed use projects. For the previous eighteen years Ms. Powers held positions with public redevelopment agencies in Colorado. She is active with a variety of civic organizations and is the Chair of the Board of the Urban Land Conservancy, Board member of the Colorado Historical Foundation, and Downtown Denver Inc (DDI), Executive Committee member of ULI-Colorado and serves on The Mayor’s Housing Plan Task Force for the City of Denver. She co-chairs the ULI-Enterprise Workforce Housing Initiative.

Robert M. Sharpe, Rancho Sahaurita
Robert M. Sharpe is the president of Sharpe & Associates, a real estate brokerage, investment, and land development firm. He has been a managing partner in more than 50 real estate ventures, involving thousands of acres of raw land, and he has sold over 10,000 lots in the Tucson, Arizona, area. He is currently developing Rancho Sahuarita—a 3,000-acre, master-planned community with a variety of amenities, in the town of Sahuarita, Arizona—which he helped incorporate in 1994. Over the past ten years, Rancho Sahuarita has closed on more than 5,000 homes, maintained a metropolitan area market share between 8 and 18 percent, and consistently been one of the top-selling master-planned communities in the country. Sharpe graduated from Arizona State University in 1975 and received a JD from the University of Arizona in 1982. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute, currently serving as the council counselor for the Community Development Councils, a governor, and a ULI trustee. As part of his longstanding relationship with ULI, Mr. Sharpe recently published a discussion paper, Residential Futures: Thought-Provoking Ideas on What’s Next for Master-Planned Communities, in partnership with the ULI Terwilliger Center for Housing.
