2009 Shaw Forum – Maximizing the Neighborhood Stabilization Program Opportunity

On the following morning, the participants reassembled at the offices of Leo A. Daly to begin the day’s work of examining promising approaches that will help communities maximize the NSP opportunity. Participants heard case study presentations by the Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership, the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and the Invest St. Paul Initiative. Participants then broke into three groups and addressed a series of questions targeted at neighborhood stabilization efforts. Each group devised its own list of opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned before reconvening and sharing their thoughts with the group as a whole. The findings and key take-aways from this group of experts led to the six tenets for successful implementation that constitute the bulk of this report….

South Campus University of Alberta Edmonton, Canada: Advisory Services Panel

The university is preparing plans for further development of the South Campus as an academic center in addition to its current use as an agricultural research station and the location of several large sports and physical education and recreation facilities, some of which are shared with the city of Edmonton and organized city groups. All of the sponsors are interested in the South Campus becoming a leading example of sustainable institutional and community development that can be a model for other Alberta institutions and communities. In addition, the university seeks detailed advice on the appropriateness and sufficiency of the current planning activities. In developing a model of sustainability for the South Campus, the university is looking for best practices, measures, and standards that are transferable to other communities and institutions in Alberta….
